How to Season Dutch Ovens
Brand new cast-iron Dutch ovens come out of the factory with a protective coating. This coating must be removed, and the Dutch oven must be cured, prior to first use.
- Wash the Dutch oven in hot soapy water with a stiff brush or plastic scouring pad.
- Rinse and dry thoroughly.
- Coat the entire surface of the Dutch oven with vegetable oil or shortening.
- Place upside down in an oven with a sheet of aluminum foil underneath to catch drippings.
- Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.
- Allow the Dutch oven to cool slowly in the oven.
- Then store uncovered in a cool, dry place.
Tips:
- Never store food in your Dutch oven.
- If your Dutch oven develops rust, scour the rust area completely and season again.
